March 2013 Meeting

Are you ready for a fun new project?

Our own, very creative Martha will be teaching us

how to make an awesome Bargello

out of a Layer Cake

during our March 20th meeting.

If possible, come set up at 5:30pm

so we can start our class at 6:00pm.

You will need to purchase the pattern I Used to be a Layer Cake for the class

There are two options, a hard copy

and for instant gratification, go for the downloadable one...

You'll also need the following:

1 layer cake of fabric

Coordinating thread

Sewing machine

Normal notions

Ruler used to cut long strips (24" is a good size) Rotary cutter

We also need a couple of ironing boards/irons to share

 and Martha will bring a couple of large cutting boards.

August Meeting

Guess what? It's ModGal time... yeah, it is here!

This Wednesday, 8/15 at the Library, 6-8 pm

Would you like to make this cute little quilt?

It is a mini-Christmas quilt (18"x15") and super fun. Can you guess why it's called the 12 Days of Christmas?

Not only is it tiny and fun, but a great opportunity to use some of those scraps left from other projects, of course, new fabric is also fun.... for the little sample, the little blocks are made with a charm pack by Moda called Joy and the sashing and borders are fabric from the stash!

Come learn how to measure, cut, and apply beautiful bindings to your quilts

and how to finish both by hand and machine

What to bring:

You will need to have a small 8"x16" practice quilt "sandwich"... needs to have a top, batting, and backing: you can quilt a big "X" to hold it together (two diagonal lines from corner to corner) and stay-stitch around it with a 1/4" seam, then trim it to 8"x16"... 

....This is a good time to use your scraps Ü

Walking foot for your machine

April Meetings

Hello ModGals!

Hope you are enjoying this wonderful spring weather.

Due to this being Eater weekend, we will not be having our Sit-N-Sew this Saturday, April 7.

Have you been working on your Mini Challenge? We will be exchanging Minis on our next meeting, Wednesday, April 18 (yes, we were bumped from Thursday!) Please let us help if you're still having trouble with you Mini :-)

Do you have a quilting tool you absolutely love? Would you like to share with the rest of the group how it has made your quilting easier, better, etc.? Bring it on the 18th for our "Tool Show-N-Tell", and if you have any finished quilts, totes, etc. to share, bring them and inspire us all.

Revised supply list for Travel Iron Tote

Hi Everyone,

The reason for the change in yardage is that the actual pattern we are using is for the largest size tote and the information in the previous post was for the smallest size tote.

The actual fabric requirements are as follows:


21" x 28"  Main fabric for caddy body - and (2) 4" x 14" pieces for handles (cut yardage = 2/3 yd)
21" x 28"  Heat resistant Ironing Board Fabric (included with pattern) with cotton batting same size               or pre-quilted Insul-Brite (available at shop)
(2) 1" or larger pretty buttons (shank buttons work well)
9"  of 1/4" elastic
1/4 yd fabric for binding

You will also need non-permanent quilt marking pens or pencils and at least a 24" ruler for marking lines on the fabric.  If you use the flat ironing board fabric with batting you will need safety pins the secure the layers for quilting.

½ yd for tote body

½ yd for handles

(1) 14½” x 17½” quilted silver coated fabric

(1) 14½” x 17½” Insul-Bright OR (2) 14½” x 17½” of cotton batting

(2) 1” pretty buttons – shank buttons work well

6” of ¼” wide elastic

This Sunday, March the 4th, we will be working on our Charity Quilt for Relay for Life

Come help us finish this beautiful quilt, and don't forget to bring your blocks!

Our "Make Me a Mini" challenge is going to be a great surprise,

so far, I've seen and heard of some really fun and creative ideas... can't wait to see them all.

We will start working on the Scrappy Log Cabin

Bring the following:

Kwik Scrappy Log Cabin pattern by Two Kwik Quilters - Sherlyn at Artisan Fabrics has the pattern.

Fabric:

  (12) squares measuring 12” of 6-12 black or dark fabrics (blocks) 

  (12) squares measuring 12” of 6-12 white or light fabrics (blocks) 

  (24) squares measuring 3” for the centers of your Log Cabins – may want to fussy cut (blocks)

  1 1/4 yd black or dark solid (blocks)

  1 1/4 yd white or light solid (blocks)

  1/3  yd for first border

  1½ yd outer border – if using a directional fabric, you’ll need 3.5 yds

  3/4 yd binding

 You can use fat quarters or purchase 1/3 yd cuts for dark and light fabrics

Supplies:

  Reynolds Freezer Paper

  Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler

  Square up ruler – 9½” is nice, but can use a 12”

  Sewing machine and manual

  Basic sewing supplies

  Iron and mat

Make Me A Mini!

A ModGal Mystery Quilt Swap

Want to play? It will be loads of fun… Mini is due April  19^th, 2012

How do I join? Sign up for the Swap between Dec 1^st and Jan 18^th

This is what you need to do:

Place a beautiful Fat Quarter of fabric you absolutely love, in a brown paper bag.

Include a card with the following information:

Your name

A list of at least 5 things you love

Bring this bag to our January 18^th meeting

*This is a secret swap, so no name on the outside of the bag!!!*

Follow these guidelines to create a Mini for your partner:

1.     Finished size: from 12”x12” to 16”x16” or any size in between

2.     Fabrics to use: you will use the Fat Quarter your partner placed in the brown bag and add as many fabrics as you wish to complete her Mini

3.     Embellishment: buttons, rickrack, beads, thick threads, etc.

4.     Techniques: patchwork, paper pieced, appliqué, etc.

5.     The finished Mini needs to be quilted and finished with binding

6.     Label your piece: attach to back of quilt; include your name, date, your swap partner’s name, etc.

7.     A card: tell about the process you used to create your piece

…and remember, this is a secret swap!

Supplies to bring to meeting:

Fabric Requirements:

o 1 Fat Quarter – per bag body

o 1Fat Quarter-per bag lining  

o Heavyweight, non-fusible interfacing- optional

o   Thin stiff cardboard- optional

o   Any embellishments you want to add- ribbon, ornaments, clips, etc…

SEWING SUPPLIES:

o Block construction thread (may want to match fabric)

o Fabric scissors

o Sewing machine in good working order with the following:

o ¼” presser foot for piecing

o Extra needles

o Your machine’s manual

o Sewing kit (seam ripper, pins etc.)

o Iron and ironing surface

o Rotary cutter, ruler and mat

o Rulers: 6”x24” and smaller ruler (ex. 6.5” square or 4x14”) 

Also, bring a snack to share and celebrate Christmas!
